Overview

The classic Salkantay trek to Machupicchu is designed for nature lovers, for those who like to enjoy a true adventure in the mountains, in the high jungle. The tour takes place through valleys, streams and snow-capped mountains, at the foot of the majestic Apu Salkantay, through natural forests to finally reach the famous Inca citadel of Machupicchu, after having made a journey for four days, and finally after having enjoyed the immense beauty of the entire trek, on the fifth day we will enjoy the unique beauty of the famous Inca citadel of Machupichu a majestic and enigmatic citadel located on the top of a mountain, which is surrounded by sacred mountains considered as its guardians whose protectors or guardians take care of it.

After a two or three hour guided tour you will have some time alone in this spectacular citadel before returning to Cusco.

Itinerary

Day 1Cusco hotel | Mollepata – Challacancha – Soraypampa – Humantay lake – Soraypampa

We start the day by picking you up from your hotel at approximately 04:00 AM. we will travel for two and a half hours until we reach a small town called Mollepata where we will stop to have our breakfast which will be optional and fast.

Then, we will continue for another hour to reach Challacancha, the starting point of our walk. while we are traveling in the car, we will see the wonderful landscape and some mountains, the white snow-capped peaks of Apus Salkantay and Humantay, two sacred guardians of the Incas.

Upon arriving at Challacancha we will meet our Support staff such as the cook who will accompany us during the tour providing us with the food that we will need throughout the walk, the muleteer who will be in charge of transporting all the equipment, food that we will use during these days which will be carried by mules and horses.

Finally, after introducing our staff we will begin the trek to Soraypampa (3850 MASL – 12631 FASL), our first camp on the first day which is located at the foot of the Humantay Mountain and close to the Salkantay Mountain.

We will start with a three-hour walk towards our first camp, the first thirty minutes will be a little steep, until we reach the irrigation canal that is in the place, then we will continue along the path through a forest of native trees, also from there we can see two of the mountains that are close to our camp, Salkantay and Humantay, two impressive and majestic mountains which are considered sacred, guardians and protectors for the Andean man.

finally, after three hours of walking we will arrive at our soraypampa camp (3850MASL – 12631 FASL), there we will have our lunch which will be prepared by our cook.

After lunch we will have time for a small nap of about thirty minutes and after this nap we will continue with our activity of the day which will be to visit the Humantay lagoon (4200 MASL –
13779) are about 3 km of round trip in total, with a duration of one hour uphill and one hour downhill, when we arrive at the place we will see a beautiful lagoon with turquoise waters, a true natural wonder at the foot of the Humantay mountain range.

We will be for about forty minutes to an hour enjoying the beauty of the place taking many photographs to immortalize the moment.

and finally it will be time to return to our camp we will begin the descent downhill with a duration of one hour, upon arrival at the camp your cook will wait for us with a delicious cup of tea or a cup of chocolate etc, it will be snack time and then We will have our dinner, it will also be prepared by our cook.

Day 2Soraypampa | Salkantay pass – Huayracpampa – Challhuay

This day will be a hard day, because the route that we will do will be about ten hours approximately and the distance will be about 22 km / 13.67 miles in total, this day we will get up very early in the morning with a cup of coca tea, the awake will be at 5:00 AM, breakfast will be ready at 5:30 AM later from this very nutritious breakfast we will start with the uphill walk for three hours with a distance of 7km / 4.34 miles towards the Salkantay pass (4650 mals – 15255 fals).

Arrived at the highest point of the Salkantay Pass hike, we will be able to appreciate the magnificent view of the place and the surroundings, we will also be very close to the majestic Salkantay snow-capped mountain (6271 mals / 20.574 fals) we will have enough time to enjoythis beauty of the place, to be able to contemplate these sacred mountains of the Incas.

A We will start with a 5 km route (3.1 mile) downhill for two and a half hours in the direction of huayracpampa which will be our lunch place, arrived at the place we will have a delicious lunch prepared by our cook.

After lunch we will continue walking downhill for two to three hours with a distance of 10km / 6.2 miles towards our Chaullay camp (2900 mals – 9514 fals) which is located in the high jungle or is also called as cloud forest ,after a brief explanation of the place we will continue with the tour, and finally we arrive at our second camp where we will spend the second night.

Day 3Challhuay | Collpapampa – Playa Sahuayacu

This day will be an almost short and easy day since this day we will walk about 18 km /, our activity for the day will begin at 06:00 am, we will begin our walk towards the town center of Playa Sahuayacu which we will do through the Valley of Santa Teresa. In this tour we will enter the high jungle or also called cloud forest where you can see forests of native trees in the area, coffee plantations, fruits of the region such as granadillas, passion fruit and avocados etc, we will be walking for five to six approximately hours, we will make some stops along the way to enjoy some of these fruits.

finally, we will arrive at our sahuayacu camp where we will have a delicious and comforting lunch and then we will have an experience with the coffee tour.

There we will visit a small coffee plantation and be able to explain how coffee is produced organically and also have the experience of being able to taste an organic coffee which will be made by you, after this coffee tasting you will have the afternoon free to recover all your energy.

Day 4Playa Sahuayacu | Llactapata - Hidroelectrica – Aguas Calientes

Like every morning we will wake you up early with a hot cup of coca tea served in your bed. then I will have time to get ready for today’s activities while enjoying your last breakfast prepared by our expert chef. We will start the hike early, and you will have the opportunity to enjoy a small part of the Famous Inca Trail with a 2 to 3 hour climb with impressive views of the Santa Teresa valley and we will arrive at Llactapata an Inca site right in front of Machu Picchu. From here we will see the famous citadel of Machupicchu the first view and the first impression of that enigmatic citadel and we will also have an impressive view of two of the mountains that surround it, the Huayna Picchu mountain and the Machupicchu mountain.

After a brief explanation about Llactapata we will continue our walk in the direction of hydroelectric with a 2 to 3-hour downhill walk. In this part of the trail, you can always see Machu Picchu and finally we will arrive at Hidroeléctrica where we will stop for lunch. place where the power plant is located which produces electrical energy for the entire region of Cusco!

After lunch we will continue with our walk, but before that we will give you two options:
1) If you are exhausted, you can take the train to Aguas Calientes ($ 34.00 extra).
2) If you are still energized and wanting to walk, you can walk from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes for about 3 hours throughout the Train tracks. Along with it, there is a nice path.we will pass through the warm paradise of cloudy forest. This is the same path that was used by the American professor Hiram Bingham, who Rediscovered Machu Picchu after being lost to the outside world for centuries!

Note: During the rainy season, the trek to Llactapata is not 100% guaranteed due to
Safety precautions. When heavy rains are frequent, this trail gets very dangerous.

Day 5Aguas Calientes | Machupicchu - Ollantaytambo – Cusco Hotel

finally, this day will be the most important day because we will visit the famous citadel of machupicchu.

After having walked these four days through mountain valleys, we finally reached our destination, the sacred citadel of Machupicchu.

This day we will visit Machupicchu early, for which we have two options to get to Machupicchu. the first is to walk along a path that goes to the citadel with a duration of one hour of walking all uphill. the second option is to go by bus that lasts about twenty-five minutes. Arrived at the citadel, the guide will give you a tour explaining the history of Machupicchu and showing you the most important places with a duration of three hours of guidance, after the guide you can stay a moment more before returning to Aguas Calientes from where you will take the train that You will return to the Ollantaytambo station with a journey of approximately two hours. Upon arriving at the Ollantaytambo station, our driver will wait for you and finally you will return, you will take a transport to Cusco which will take two hours of travel. Upon arrival in Cusco, you will be dropped off at the hotel and our trip ends there.

You must bring

  • A light backpack with a change of clothes for the entire period of the trek - be prepared for a wide range of changes in temperature.
  • Rain gear (jacket and pants if available) or a rain poncho. Plastic ponchos can be purchased in Cusco
  • Resistant footwear, waterproof trekking boots are recommended. The extra stockings can not be missing
  • Sandals or flip flops are also good to give your feet a chance to breathe at night if you want to wear them
  • Warm clothing, including jacket, fleeces, gloves, scarf, and hat. Thermal clothing is also recommended, especially for sleeping

Before You Go:

How many days do I need to acclimate in Cusco before the Trek?

It is very important to be well acclimatized to the altitude before pushing yourself on a hike. We recommend that you arrive in Cusco at least two to three days before the trek begins to help you adjust and avoid possible problems with altitude sickness during the trek. You may have already been to another area of Peru at high altitudes before arriving in Cusco. In that case, we recommend that you have a full day in Cusco to rest, recover from your trip, and enjoy the sights and sounds of Cusco before leaving for the trek. Here are some suggestions of activities to do in the vicinity of Cusco before starting your adventure trip:

Briefing or Informative Meeting

All meetings and briefings are very important, which takes place at our office or at your hotel at 5:00 p.m. one night before the tour starts. These meetings last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. If for any reason you cannot attend our informative meeting, you must contact Ausangate Explore by email or by Whatsapp.

Trek Balance Payment (in Cusco)

The hike must be paid in full. one day before your departure (usually after the briefing). It would be greatly appreciated if you pay the balance of the trek in cash in US dollars or local currency at our Office. You can pay by credit card or PAYPAL online, but you will have to pay a 5% service charge, charged by VISA and PAYPAL. We do not accept bank checks or payment of the balance in traveler’s checks.

Strikes and demonstrations

Strikes and demonstrations are common in Peru, and this can interrupt some of our tours. Roads can be blocked and railway tracks can be taken. However, we will try to make your trip as smooth as possible. originally planned, even if it means going out the night before the scheduled date. under these circumstances, tours may also be cancelled. In case of changes or cancellations, everything will be coordinated with you and our operations staff. Your safety is our top priority and our decisions will be made to protect it.
